9 Best Gentle Baby Wipes

1. Water Wipes

OUR PICK

Baby Wipes Our Pick

With thousands of positive reviews on Amazon, Water Wipes is a popular non-toxic baby wipe option for a good reason!

These non-toxic baby wipes contain two ingredients which are 99% water and 0.1% of Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) seed extract.

With its simple formula of two ingredients, these hypoallergenic baby wipes are safe for premature, infant, and newborn skin!

I tested these wipes on my baby and they feel soothing enough on his skin! It also does a great job of cleaning up messes.

You don’t have to worry about phthalates, parabens, fragrance, and other toxic chemicals here!

Although, it has recently been disclosed that their grapefruit seed extract contains a small amount of benzalkonium chloride which is 0.002%.

Is benzalkonium chloride something I should be worried about?

Benzalkonium chloride is known to be an irritant and sensitizer. According to research, these harmful effects are unlikely in doses below 0.1%.

Water Wipes contain 50 times less than this percentage, so it’s nothing to worry about. It’s still SAFE and the best baby wipe option I recommend!

You can get these safe baby wipes in a 3-pack with a total of 720 sheets. Although if you travel a lot like me, then they have a 1-pack too!

Wipes Ingredients: Purified water (99%), Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract (0.1%)

2. The Honest Company Hypoallergenic Baby Wipes

BEST THICK BABY WIPES

Best Thick Baby Wipes

The Honest Company is a great company that makes one of the BEST baby wipes out there.

What I love about these Honest baby wipes is how thick and DURABLE they are!

They can sort out all kinds of messes, and you don’t need to use a lot of wipes every time you change your baby’s diaper. These wipes will last a LONG time!

I’ve had these wipes for a few months and they’ve held up really well against messes!

These non-toxic baby wipes are free of alcohol, chlorine, parabens, fragrance, and are dermatologist-tested.

What’s great is that they’re plant-based too, making them biodegradable and safer for the environment!

These baby wipes had a formula change in 2019. Instead of using silver citrate as a preservative, they started using sodium benzoate instead.

Some parents found that this change caused new skin irritation, unlike the older formulation.

However, other parents also praised how great the newer Honest Company Baby Wipes formulation was for their baby’s skin.

Sodium benzoate is a preservative that’s commonly used in a lot of wipes. It’s also safer compared to using phenoxyethanol as a preservative.

Sodium benzoate isn’t used in high doses for baby wipes, so that should ease your mind. It’s still a product I recommend, so it’s up to you if you want to give it a shot!

You can get these safe baby wipes in a value-filled 576-count, but if you want to maximize your purchase, there’s a 720-count too. There’s also a 288-count that’s perfect for parents who want to try it out first.

Wipes Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Punica Granatum Juice Extract, Decyl Glucoside, Citric Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Benzoate

  • Thick and durable sheets make it long-lasting

  • Long-lasting

Cons

  • Some parents reported that it’s not as thick as it used to be
  • Formula change means it might not work the same way anymore

3. ATTITUDE Biodegradable Baby Wipes

BEST ECO-FRIENDLY BABY WIPES

Best Environment-friendly option

These wipes are made of 100% cellulose fiber, a material that’s 100% biodegradable and compostable, making it one of the best ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY options on this list!

All moms know that waste piles up when you have a kid, so I’m glad these biodegradable wipes ease my mind a little.

On top of that, what I love about ATTITUDE is that for every product sold, ATTITUDE commits to planting a tree in collaboration with two major non-profit organizations.

These best natural baby wipes are made of a few ingredients that are safe and gentle for any baby.

It also has a Seal of Approval by Parent Tested Parent Approved (PTPA) and is approved by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) as a certified safe product!

This product DOES contain sodium benzoate, though, but the right amount was used to keep it non-toxic.

It still works great as a preservative, and you don’t have to worry about any bacteria and mold growing inside the package!

You can get these biodegradable baby wipes in a travel-friendly size of 72-count, but you can also get a pack of 3 if you’re looking for a better value.

Wipes Ingredients: Water, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Glycerin, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Citric Acid

Pros

  • 100% biodegradable and compostable
  • Certified to be safe and gentle for babies
  • Long-lasting

Cons

  • Some parents found it difficult to pull out of the container

4. ATTITUDE Natural Baby Wipes

ATTITUDE Natural Baby Wipes

ATTITUDE makes another variant of their best natural baby wipes, and these are supposedly a more NATURAL baby wipe option.

The only difference these natural baby wipes have from the previous one is the added ingredient of oat kernel flour.

This oatmeal ingredient adds soothing properties that would work well for rashes or irritated skin.

Whenever my baby has itchy skin, I know I can count on these wipes to do the job!

Other than that, these natural baby wipes share the same ingredients as the biodegradable ones and are both made of the same cellulose fiber.

It’s phthalate-free, paraben-free, and fragrance-free!

This product is also EWG-certified, which goes to show how trustworthy and safe ATTITUDE baby wipes are!

Pros

  • 100% biodegradable and compostable
  • Certified to be safe and gentle for babies
  • Long-lasting
  • Oatmeal ingredient gives soothing properties

Cons

  • Some parents found it difficult to pull out of the container

5. Babyganics Baby Wipes

Babyganics Baby Wipes

At first, I saw that these non-toxic baby wipes contain a lot of ingredients, but none of them are a cause of concern, so that should ease your mind.

Babyganics tries to market their wipes as eco-friendly by displaying “plant-based” in the description.

In reality, they only use plant-derived ingredients for the wipes, as you’ll see from the various oils present in the ingredients.

The wipes themselves aren’t plant-based nor are they biodegradable. They’re pretty much like fabric or clothes.

Despite that, that doesn’t stop me from recommending them!

This product is free from harmful substances like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, dyes, and fragrance. They also claim that it’s pediatrician and dermatologist-tested!

These wipes are GENTLE and SAFE for any baby! I rave about how soft they are too!

These baby wipes also contain sodium benzoate, which helps prevent molds and bacteria from forming and makes it last longer.

Small amounts of sodium benzoate are nothing to worry about, so I still recommend it as a safe product for your little one.

You can get these wipes in an 80-count either with a pack of 3 or 10. You can also get a 400-count 1-pack if you want to go for the middle ground.

Wipes Ingredients: Water, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Vegetable Oil, Glycerin, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2-Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Vaccinium Macrocarpon (Cranberry) Seed Oil, Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin) Seed Oil, Rubus Idaeus (Red Raspberry) Seed Oil

Pros

  • Safe and gentle formula works great for baby’s sensitive skin
  • Long-lasting

Cons

  • Not eco-friendly as they make it out to be
  • Non-biodegradable

6. Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature Water-Based Baby Wipes

Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature Water-Based Baby Wipes-06

Jackson Reece is a great reliable and trustworthy brand, and their baby wipes are hard not to recommend!

What makes these sensitive baby wipes stand out is that they’re made of chlorine-free wood pulp.

Don’t worry; it’s natural and FREE from plastic, polyester, and other synthetic substances that are usually used for baby wipes!

Jackson Reece baby wipes are 100% biodegradable and compostable in 60 days.

With how the modern landfill management system works, this is still unlikely. It’s still commendable and great for environment-conscious parents!

These eco-friendly wipes only have a few ingredients that are formulated to be safe for eczema-prone and sensitive skin.

This simple-enough product gets the job done, and you don’t have to worry about a thing! It’s non-toxic and free from fragrance, phthalates, parabens, and other harmful substances.

I can clean up messes and even use it for moisturizing, no problem!

You can get these chemical-free baby wipes in a travel-friendly size that holds 56 wipes. You can either go for a 4-pack or go for a longer-lasting stock option with a pack of 12.

Wipes Ingredients: Purified Water, Betaine, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Levulinic Acid, Sodium Levulinate, Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Citrate

Pros

  • Made from natural and compostable material
  • Has a Climate-Pledge Friendly badge on Amazon
  • Gentle and safe formula works well for eczema-prone and sensitive skin

Cons

  • Some parents found it too thin
  • Some parents found it difficult to pull out of the container

7. Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature Plant-Based Baby Wipes

Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature Plant-Based Baby Wipes-07

Jackson Reece also offers another variant of their organic baby wipes, which they market as more environment-friendly.

However, the only difference between these baby wipes and the water-based organic baby wipes is that there are added plant-derived ingredients.

These added ingredients are chamomile extract and aloe vera; these two ingredients give soothing properties that would work great for rashes or other damaged skin.

I can vouch that they feel EXTREMELY soft to the touch!

Other than that, these chemical-free baby wipes share the same material and ingredients as the water-based organic baby wipes. They’re both 100% biodegradable and compostable within 60 days!

You can only get Jackson Reece wipes in a travel-friendly size in a 12-pack with a total count of 672 wipes.

Wipes Ingredients: Purified Water, Betaine, Glycerin, Caprylyl / Capryl Glucoside, Levulinic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Levulinate, Chamomilla (Chamomile) Recutita Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Sodium Citrate

  • Some parents found it too thin
  • Some parents found it difficult to pull out of the container

8. Seventh Generation Wipes

Seventh Generation Baby Wipes

With thousands of reviews on Amazon, Seventh Generation Wipes are great baby wipes that WON’T DISAPPOINT!

Overall, this is a great, hypoallergenic, paraben-free, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free product. It feels really soft, too, so that’s a plus for your baby!

These wipes are also thick, making them great for cleaning your baby’s hands and other messy situations without having to use too many sheets.

I only had to use ONE wipe to get rid of a pretty big mess my kid made!

They’re made of a blend of wood pulp, polypropylene, and polyethylene. This isn’t the most natural material blend, but it’s still safe enough for your baby.

Sodium benzoate is also used as a preservative to make it last longer, and it also helps with keeping molds and bacteria growth at a minimum!

However, these sensitive baby wipes have an ingredient that I find quite questionable.

There’s not much research on cocamidopropyl PG-dimonium chloride phosphate, but it is derived from coconut oil and helps add to the cleaning power of these baby wipes.

Some speculated that this is also used as a preservative, but I can neither confirm nor deny that speculation.

Despite this ingredient, I’m still comfortable recommending these wipes for your baby, so it’s up to you if you want to try them out!

You can get these fragrance-free wipes at a value-filled 12-pack with a total count of 768 baby wipes.

Wipes Ingredients: Water, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Quillaja Saponaria Wood Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate

Pros

  • Formulated to be safe for babies
  • Long-lasting
  • Great value
  • Thick and soft finish makes cleaning easier

Cons

  • Has a questionable ingredient

9. Bloom BABY Baby Wipes

Bloom BABY Baby Wipes

These baby wipes by Bloom BABY are also widely admired by a lot of parents, and 98% of its formula is made of natural ingredients!

These wipes are made of EcoFiber material, which they claim to be derived from plants. It’s supposedly safer than other synthetic materials, which are usually used for baby wipes, so that’s great!

What makes these non-toxic baby wipes great is that some of their ingredients provide different benefits that you don’t normally see in other baby wipes.

What do I mean?

The olive oil ingredient provides vitamin A, B-Complex, D, Omega-3, and Omega-6! While the glycerin, glyceryl oleate, and comfrey extract work together to soothe and moisturize your baby’s skin!

On the downside, these baby wipes use phenoxyethanol as a preservative. Even though less than 1% was used, which is considered to be safe for infants, other preservatives are safer to use like sodium benzoate.

Other than that, these Bloom BABY baby wipes have a great formula that’s safe and gentle for most babies. Fragrance and other harmful/toxic chemicals aren’t used for these wipes.

I also love how thick they are, which makes cleaning a lot easier, and you’ll be able to use these baby wipes for a long time too!

You can only get these non-toxic baby wipes in a 1-pack with 80 baby wipes inside, which isn’t great.

At least it’s travel-friendly and you can give it a try first and see if it will work great for your baby!

Wipes Ingredients: Water, Olus Oil, Glycerin, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2-Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Comfrey Extract (Symphytum Officinale Extract), Olive Oil (Olea Europaea Fruit Oil), Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate

  • Natural ingredients provide additional benefits
  • Formula is gentle and safe for babies
  • Thick finish makes cleaning more convenient
  • Travel-friendly size

Cons

  • Contains phenoxyethanol
  • No baby wipe options for multiple packs
  • Some parents claimed that the thickness makes it feel rough

Best Practices for Using Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are great baby products that make things easier and more convenient.

Even if you go for one of the best non-toxic baby wipes listed above, you should make sure to use these products appropriately.

1. Use Less Frequently

You should only use baby wipes when there’s NO convenient way to clean your baby any other way.

This is why baby wipes are PERFECT when you’re on the go!

However, if you’re at home, it would be best to wash your baby’s sensitive areas with water, a non-toxic baby wash product, and a soft washcloth.

You can use baby wipes to clean off poop on your baby’s butt, but if your baby only peed, then a soft and dry washcloth is enough to get the job done.

Not only will you reduce the chances of harsh chemicals making contact with your baby’s skin, but you’ll also reduce your waste production.

Your stock of wipes will also last longer, so that’s a plus!

2. DON’T Flush Down the Toilet

Some non-toxic baby wipes are made of biodegradable and compostable material, and some brands even claim they sell flushable wipes.

Even so, these won’t decompose quickly when you flush them down the toilet. They’ll just end up causing MAJOR issues in sewer systems!

Despite being biodegradable and compostable, they also won’t decompose in a reasonable amount of time because of how landfills work.

Materials can only break down when there’s oxygen present. Since landfills are designed to be air-tight, there isn’t enough oxygen for these baby wipes to decompose.

I recommend you AVOID FLUSHING disposable wipes altogether.

Instead, throw them away in the garbage and make it a point to use baby wipes less frequently.

What to Look for When Buying the Best Non-Toxic Baby Wipes

What to look for in baby wipes

There are a lot of non-toxic baby wipes you can find in the market, so narrowing them down by using different factors can help make things easier.

I took note of the main factors to help us decide which are the best non-toxic baby wipes out there.

#1 Ingredients

Ingredients are the most important factor when it comes to non-toxic baby wipes.

It could be overwhelming and confusing, but taking note of the ingredients in baby wipes can go a long way for the safety of your child!

Some harmful ingredients can even cause eczema, irregular body system functions, and cancer, so make sure to always check the ingredients in these products!

The best baby wipes contain minimal ingredients or have mostly natural ingredients.

I kept this in mind when listing down the products above, so that should make things easier for you.

#2 Certifications

Certifications are a surefire way to know that a pack of baby wipes is made with NO TOXIC INGREDIENTS and guaranteed safe for babies.

Look for certifications such as the following:

  • USDA Organic
  • EWG Verified
  • Non-GMO Project Verified
  • Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free and non-tested on animals)

Remember to do your own research as well!

#3 Price and Quantity

Baby wipes aren’t supposed to be expensive, and they should have enough baby wipe sheets to handle multiple uses for a week. It’s also great to go for baby wipes you can buy in packs!

Collectively, baby essentials are costly, so finding ways to save money on longer-lasting baby products is great for any family!

#4 Thickness and Softness

Non-toxic baby wipes should also be thick enough to get the job done.

Thin baby wipes won’t cut it, and you’ll end up using too many sheets every time you change your baby’s diaper.

Thick baby wipes will make cleaning easier and faster, and since you only need to use fewer sheets, your disposable baby wipes will last longer too, so that’s great!

It also helps to have wipes that feel soft on the skin. Baby wipes that are too rough can damage your baby’s sensitive areas, so a soft baby wipe will be best.

Having the right amount of softness and texture will be best for cleaning!

#5 Brands

There are tons of baby brands out there, and it could be hard to identify which are the best baby brands that sell the safest and best non-toxic baby wipes.

You want to make sure that you go for brands that are transparent and have been certified or recognized to be safe for babies.

There are popular brands like Huggies and Pampers that you would think contain safe ingredients for your baby, but it turns out, these Pampers and Huggies Wipes use ingredients that can be HARMFUL to your bundle of joy.

These two brands use several types of parabens as a preservative for some of their disposable baby wipes.

Parabens are bad news, and you’ll know more about it when you scroll down to what ingredients you should avoid in baby wipes.

#6 Effectiveness

You can’t buy baby wipes that do not clean well.

It’s important to check the effectiveness of baby wipes as you will be using these A LOT around your baby.

To test the wipes, I tried creating my own messes (out of food and other substances) to check how well the wipes clean them up; you can try this as well!

You can also read product reviews from other customers who have used a specific brand and see how well it worked for them.

Once you have checked and tested that they are effective and safe to use, you’re good!

#7 Ease of Use

Baby wipes aren’t supposed to be complicated. One swipe of a sheet should take care of a mess in SECONDS.

If the baby wipes can barely take care of any spills or messes, it is not worth buying.

#8 Availability

Of course, if you end up running out of baby wipes, you’ll have to restock.

Find a brand that is common, easy to find, but still safe to use to save you the time and hassle of finding a new brand.

Baby wipes shouldn’t be hard to find, but the completely non-toxic ones may be a little trickier (and pricier) to spot.

Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Baby Wipes

Toxic Ingredients to avoid in baby wipes

Baby wipes come in direct contact with your baby’s sensitive areas, so it’s important to know a list of baby wipes ingredients.

To make things easier for you, I listed down the toxic ingredients and harmful chemicals to avoid in baby wipes, as well as some you should look out for before you make a purchase.

Fragrance/Perfume

This ingredient is a BIG NO-NO when it comes to baby products.

Any fragrance can contain hundreds of harmful substances like phthalates and other synthetic ingredients.

Some manufacturers take advantage of placing “Fragrance” or “Perfume” in their ingredient list to avoid disclosing other substances that were used, so be careful!

All products listed above are fragrance-free, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

Parabens

Used as synthetic preservatives, parabens have been linked to rashes, hormonal disruption, cancer, and even infertility!

This applies to other ingredients that have “paraben” in their name like methylparaben, ethylparaben, and butylparaben among others.

Phenoxyethanol

This is commonly used as a “less toxic” synthetic preservative to parabens. However, it’s still linked to infant skin irritation, eczema, and nervous system function.

Even though it’s supposedly safer, I still recommend you AVOID it if you can.

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)

This is a petroleum-based enhancer that can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.

This toxic by-product has been linked to skin irritation, allergies, organ toxicity, and cancer! Anything that starts with “PEG-” is also included.

Polysorbate 20

The toxicity of polysorbate 20 can be up for debate. According to EWG, polysorbate 20 is fairly safe, but it depends on the usage.

Polysorbate 20 is usually treated with ethylene oxide, a chemical that can also be contaminated with 1,4 dioxane.

It’s better to be safe than sorry, so watch out for this ingredient as well!

Propylene Glycol

This is another petroleum-based chemical that’s been linked to skin irritation and organ issues.

Even though propylene glycol breaks down inside the body, infants can’t do that effectively yet compared to adults.

To be safe, I recommend AVOIDING this ingredient if you can.

Sodium Benzoate

This is a synthetic preservative that’s used in a lot of baby wipes.

In HIGH doses, this ingredient has been linked to organ system toxicity and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

When paired with ascorbic acid, it can also turn into toxic benzene which is known to be carcinogenic.

This is a safe substance that won’t harm your baby in small doses, but beware if there’s ascorbic acid mixed with it!

Tocopheryl Acetate

This ingredient is a synthetic version of Vitamin E that’s commonly used as a preservative in skincare products.

It can sometimes be contaminated with hydroquinone, which has been linked to skin irritation.

Triclosan

This is another preservative that has been linked to eye and skin irritation, as well as being an endocrine disruptor.

Safe Baby Wipes Ingredients to Look For

Other than the potentially harmful ingredients listed above, there are also a couple of ingredients you should know more about.

These ingredients are commonly used in a lot of non-toxic baby wipes. It can help ease your mind when you know that some of these ingredients are SAFE or even BENEFICIAL to your baby.

Water

Everyone knows what water is, but I still feel like I should include it on the list. Water can sometimes be listed as Aqua, Purified Water, Pure Water, or Eau.

These are all the same thing, and water is an essential ingredient in baby wipes.

Glycerin

This ingredient is derived from natural sources like plants and animals or made synthetically from petroleum.

This makes it controversial for some parents, but both are considered safe for babies.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is commonly used in a lot of baby wipes, and they act as a pH balancer. It is also used as a disinfectant which helps deal with bacteria.

Additionally, citric acid also helps wipes last LONGER!

It can be naturally-derived or synthetically made, but both are considered to be safe.

Natural/Plant-Derived Ingredients

There’s a bunch of plant and fruit-derived substances listed above, and a lot of them give benefits to your baby.

Some can be sources of vitamins, while some of them work well to moisturize and clean the skin.

Overall, these natural ingredients are safe and great for most babies.

Because of this, she began to research what the best ingredients and materials were for children and made it her mission to share this information with other mothers.
