Nesting during pregnancy will surely excite you to clean your soon-to-be baby’s nursery and organize non-toxic cribs, organic mattresses, baby’s organic clothing, and other baby essentials.
I think I might’ve spent too much time on trying to find the perfect items for my baby’s new bedroom
In this phase, I know you are thinking of what to remove and what to add to your baby’s nursery, as this concerns the baby’s exposure to harmful chemicals and overall safety.
Yet, there is no need to fret because I will help you unravel the things you need to have and the materials you must avoid in this article on having a non toxic nursery.
So, moms and pops, sit back and read because this is all you’ll ever need!
Things You’ll Need in a Non-Toxic Nursery
To create a healthy environment for your babies to sleep well, develop, and grow, you must start with a non-toxic nursery.
To have this, you will need the list below to be informed of what things you MUST have inside your baby’s non-toxic nursery room.
Here’s a breakdown of what I looked for!
1. Furniture
To complete your non-toxic nursery, I have a list of Greenguard Gold Certified furniture pieces.
Anything with this certification has my full support!
This certification means that the furniture has PASSED PROTOCOLS to ensure the volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde emissions are within strict limits.
So, here are some pieces of baby furniture I can recommend!
Pottery Barn Kendall Crib
One thing that is always necessary to help your baby sleep independently, securely, and comfortably is a crib. For that, the Pottery Barn Kendall convertible crib is suited for the job.
This crib is made of solid poplar wood, which means it can carry you and your baby’s weight and even survive a high impact from tantrums.
Aside from the solid wood, the Kendall Crib is made using the Mortise-and-Tenon method, which makes its structure STABLE and ROBUST.
I was able to money on different heightened-cribs as this convertible crib can accommodate my baby from its 14.5″, 19.5″, and 24.5″ changeable heights.
You can also choose these crib colors: Simply White, Gray, Weathered Navy, and Weathered White.
More importantly, it comes with Greenguard Gold certification, made from a Fair Trade Certified facility.
It is certified tested by a legitimate third-party laboratory to ensure that the crib’s materials are SAFE from harmful chemicals.
You can also get one with adjustable rails for when you are ready to lower your baby’s crib!
However, take note that this crib mattress isn’t perfect; some reviews have reported it to be too soft for babies, which is a hazard! It may also sag easily after a few uses.
4-in-1 Convertible Romina Crib
If you think the previous crib is not your cup of tea, another Greenguard Gold Certified crib I recommend is the 4-in-1 convertible Romina crib.
With this crib, you have a day bed, a toddler bed, and a full-sized bed, which means catering to your baby’s growth and development in a SINGLE purchase!
It is also made from 100% sustainably-sourced solid wood.
This composition implies that you are GUARANTEED a piece of furniture with durable and sustainable materials.
It will help your babies sleep independently with secured solid wood crib mattress supports!
For your baby to have a better sleep, indoor air quality, and a much safer environment, this Romina crib has also utilized a 100% Organic Finish construction.
Of course, with all these benefits comes a high price tag. Consider setting aside a separate budget if you want to purchase this crib.
Additionally, there may be a strong smell upon receiving the crib.
Babyletto Electronic Rocking Chair
A crib is an essential piece of furniture for ensuring that your baby is well-rested.
However, there are other things to consider, like a rocking chair to mimic the movements inside the womb.
This Babyletto Kiwi Electronic Recliner and Swivel Glider is a PERFECT companion for mothers and newborns, as you can do your breast milk feeding sessions here.
It offers a 270-degree flowing swivel and an upright back-and-forth movement to cater not just to the baby but to mothers as well, from their post-partum body aches.
To add, you MUST know that this is Greenguard Gold certified!
It is made from eco-performance, water-repellant, and stain-resistant fabric, which means it has been made from recycled plastics and polyester yarn.
Furthermore, it has also been tested and passed the CertiPUR-US certification, making all the materials within the standards regulated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
You can also conveniently charge your devices with the built-in USB port!
BE WARNED! It is NOT recommended to leave your USB cord plugged in as it may heat up.
The electric recliner may also seem impractical to some who prefer a hand lever.
Babyletto 6-Drawer Double Dresser
Baby blankets, clothes, and other baby materials can be effortlessly stored and organized using the Babyletto 6-drawer Double Dresser.
This long-lasting and heavy-duty drawer is designed with baby’s safety in mind as it has stop-drawer features and an anti-tip kit.
Furthermore, it is painted using a NON-TOXIC painting and staining process.
This Greenguard Gold certified double dresser is made from New Zealand pine wood, meaning it is not just durable, but also has a smooth texture to keep baby’s skin safe.
I’ve never heard of New Zealand pine wood before, but it’s been good to me so far!
It is also lightweight for parents to move around!
It also satisfies the US CPSC standards, which assure everyone that this furniture is SAFE from all other harmful chemicals, creating a healthy, non-toxic baby nursery for your baby.
Be careful, though, as the paint may scratch off quite easily and it will easily crack if not handled with care.
2. Textile
In creating a non-toxic nursery, you MUST consider the textile of your baby’s pillows, blankets, and crib sheets.
The best way to find out what’s in and out is by looking at products that have competently earned the badge for being a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
Good for you because I have some GOTS-certified product recommendations that can ease your hunt for your baby’s nursery materials.
Organic Nursing Pillows
When nursing a baby, you would like both of you to feel the comfort and softness of cotton, much more if it is GOTS-certified.
Well, a Nook Niche organic nursing pillow may fulfill this desire as it provides an Oeko-Tex Certified Tencel.
You get to have a pillow that has been scientifically tested against 350 toxic compounds from the fabric down to the accessories.
This is an EXCELLENT fit for your non-toxic nursery as it is ensured safe to be in contact with the baby!
Organic Baby Blankets
Relief on a cold night and skin safety in one is ALWAYS possible with the Burt’s Bees Baby organic baby blanket.
This baby blanket is made from 100% organic muslin cotton, which helps prevent your baby from getting skin irritation compared to blankets made from unreliable materials.
Most importantly, this one’s cotton is reliably-sourced and satisfies the GOTS certification standards.
As this baby blanket is PURELY organic, it means your baby is safe from further chemical exposure, and the baby will have a breathable and light nighttime companion!
Additionally, organic sleep sacks are also a good choice for a safe, cozy sleep!
Organic Crib Sheet
Ensuring that your baby gets to sleep soundly during nap time and nighttime is a primary goal for parents like you.
But how?
The answer to that is a Coyuchi Organic Crinkled Percale crib sheet, as this can provide an extra layer of protection to your baby’s skin and an overlay to keep your baby COZY!
It is made from GOTS-certified 100% organic cotton in a Fair Trade-certified Facility in India.
Besides these certifications, this crib sheet is also Made Safe certified, meaning it was created WITHOUT harmful substances for humans and the environment.
3. Organic Baby Bedding and Mattress
Supporting your baby’s bone growth and development is not only reliant on good milk, healthy food, and vitamins.
In this case, a good crib mattress can also do the trick for you!
In finding a good mattress, the right thing to do is to look for the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) badge attached to mattresses on the market.
GOLS is a standard for products manufactured from organic natural rubber latex, organic baby bedding, and mattresses.
To ease your crib mattress-finding journey, I have some GOLS-certified products I prefer here.
Naturepedic Mattress
In getting an organic crib mattress, you will look for how it will radiate safety and comfort while giving you an easygoing cleaning process.
For this description, nothing fits more than the Naturepedic Classic Crib mattress made from a USDA Organic Seal-certified organic cotton fabric and PLA non-GMO synthetic fiber.
- According to a study on antimicrobial textiles, these materials, especially organic cotton, have exceptional antimicrobial properties that hinder the growth of microbes that can harm your baby’s skin and overall health!
Besides that, it has waterproofing technology and WaveSupport to provide a sturdy and firm foundation for your baby’s bones.
You also need to know that this organic mattress passed the US flammability requirements without any traces of chemical flame retardants.
However, here are a few drawbacks to consider:
As such, Naturepedic is a high-end brand, and therefore, quite expensive. Take note that, over time, some mattresses may be lumpy or saggy.
My Green Mattress
This one’s a little above anything else because it has ALL THREE certifications and MORE!
The My Green mattress offers organic cotton, organic wool, organic coconut pad, and organic latex, which scream environment-friendly and, most of all, baby-friendly.
Since this non-toxic baby nursery mattress has passed strict standard procedures, it is also essential to point out that it met the CPSC requirements,
It is SAFE to use without harmful toxins, substances, and chemicals.
With all these, your baby can surely get a good night’s sleep on My Green’s mattress because it is breathable, firm, and certified organic.
However, one drawback is that it may be too soft or bouncy for some.
4. Non-Toxic Dyes and Paints
Making a cozy non-toxic nursery for a baby does not end in a myriad of nursery furniture; it needs some color – a touch of color!
However, the better choice in selecting paints is always the VOC-free paint brands.
It is best to use paint materials without volatile organic compounds that can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver, and kidney, as told by experts.
I know it’s a lot to take in, but don’t fret. I have here something for your paint reference.
Ecos Paint
In its entirety, the best option SHOULD always be a ZERO-VOC within your paints, and that is what Ecos Paint has to offer.
This paint has undergone tests from 11 to 14 days and showed that this does not release any VOC emissions.
With this, it is tagged safe to use for a nursery, classroom, and even an office’s interior. Its ingredients include:
- Water
- Flexible elastic polymers
- Skincare components
- Moisturizers, shampoo, soap, and cookware elements
All of these mean that the VOC-free eggshell Ecos Paints are safe to use and do not impede indoor air quality.
Other Non-Toxic Materials to Consider
Aside from the actual furniture in your baby’s room, you can’t forget the other things needed to make sure the place is clean and toxin-free while your baby spends its free time there!
I’ve included a few extra items that I think are important in keeping everything SAFE!
Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
Kids can get messy in their nursery which is why an all-natural, organic, all-purpose cleaner is more than necessary!
A lot of traditional cleaners likely contain strong chemicals that may be unsafe for you baby to smell or intake.
Look for cleaners that are FREE of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and phthalates.
I recommend Branch Basics All-Purpose Cleaner. Simply mix in water and the concentrate and spray away!
This brand is plant-based and certified non-toxic, perfectly safe for babies!
For small messes, non-toxic wipes are also important!
My favorite brand is Water Wipes as it contains only water and grapefruit seed extract; ZERO chemicals added!
You will need these for when your baby spills something or has an accident.
Non-Toxic Personal Care Products
Of course, your baby’s hygiene is also important!
I’ve listed some important personal care products that you can keep in the nursery to ensure your baby stays clean!
Don’t just buy any product! Watch out for harmful ingredients that may irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions!
For starters, diaper cream is a MUST in case your baby has diaper rash. You can keep a tube of Honest Company Diaper Cream so you can soothe your baby’s bottom with safe and eco-friendly ingredients!
You also want to keep your baby’s skin smooth, which is why I recommend Puracy Organic Baby Lotion for soft, supple skin!
No need to worry about harmful ingredients! Keep these in your nursery so you can be ready anytime!
Materials to AVOID in Your Baby’s Nursery
As much as you have things you will need, you also have materials to AVOID in creating a non-toxic nursery for your little ones.
Avoiding the listed materials below would mean a lot in preventing your precious baby from inhaling dangerous chemicals and harmful toxins in the baby’s room.
Be wary of these:
1. Volatile Organic Compounds
VOC is any compound that NEGATIVELY alters the essence of the indoor air in your baby’s room.
These can still impose adverse health effects like cancer, eye irritation, and nose and throat problems, as the American Lung Association (ALA) describes.
You must note that it not only exists in paints but also in furniture, air fresheners, carpets, wood toys, and other home products.
2. Harmful Chemicals Like Flame Retardants
As parents, a chemical that will most likely be your number one enemy is a flame retardant.
Based on the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), these are chemicals embedded in any materials to hinder fire.
However, the cons outweigh that single benefit because flame retardants can adversely affect your baby’s cognitive and hormonal development.
Consistent exposure to chemical flame retardants can cause cancer and aggression among young ones!
Even if babies and children do not directly put it into their mouths, it can penetrate the skin and inhale through toys, furniture, and mattresses.
3. Toxic Chemicals Like PFAS Chemicals
The keyword for PFAS chemicals is manufactured.
These are manufactured chemicals that MUST NOT be present in your baby’s area. PFAS chemicals, based on a study, can cause cancer, thyroid issues, and diminished immunity.
Why a Non-Toxic Nursery Is Better
I prefer (and you should too) non-toxic nursery furniture, materials, and other equipment in a baby’s area because of these reasons:
- Safe for babies as it will not irritate their skin nor cause adverse health issues in cognitive and behavioral facets.
- Provide excellent indoor air that helps parents and babies achieve a healthy respiratory system and overall health.
- Enhance the quality of sleep by having a safe environment and clean air.
- Support bone development, particularly with non-toxic solid wood cribs and organic mattresses.
- Sustainable and eco-friendly as these non-toxic baby furniture are certified by USDA, GOLS, GOTS, Greenguard Gold, and Oeko-Tex.
- Durable and long-lasting as most of these children’s furniture is made from solid wood, not engineered wood.
What to Look for When Buying Non-Toxic Baby Furniture
Buying non-toxic baby furniture with non-toxic paints entails a keen eye to observe what these products are made of and if these have undergone US-certified scientific processes.
As I mentioned earlier, anything with these certifications is TRULY RELIABLE!
For your next shopping reference, here are what I look for when buying non-toxic baby furniture:
1. Greenguard Gold-Certified
Searching for the best nursery furniture, all you need is a Greenguard Gold Certification. Any of these pieces of furniture can have the certification!
- Baby cradles or bassinets
- Solid wood crib
- Toddler bed
- Organic mattress
- Crib mattress
- Nap mats
- Organic crib sheets
- A dresser
- Changing table or changing pads
- Rocking chair
- High chairs or folding high chairs
A Greenguard Gold Certification means that the materials and furniture you are buying have undergone a process of experts reviewing the following:
- Manufacturing procedures
- The product’s composition
When you have Greenguard Gold Certified cribs and other furniture, it automatically suggests that your product has lower levels of volatile organic compounds and has been rigidly checked for toxic chemicals.
2. Global Organic Textile Standard
The GOTS certification means that the clothing or any textile in your baby products does not have traces of GMOs or genetically modified organisms which are usually linked with allergies.
Also, all textiles are sourced naturally from organic fibers, organic wool, and organic cotton. A GOTS-certified material also fulfills the Ecological and Social Criteria.
Aside from that, this has gone through third-party testing, ensuring objective and reliable judgment on the quality of products.
I refer to this standard when searching for clothes, blankets, rugs, and anything fabric.
3. Global Organic Latex Standard
A GOLS certification means you get to have latex products that pass strict guidelines on the environment and human health safety.
As you have a safe latex material, without flame retardants and VOC, your baby is ensured of better sleep quality, bone support, and a healthier overall feeling.
When I see a mattress with this certification, I know it’s good for my baby!
4. VOC-Free Paint Brands
Another thing you should look for is the finishing paint for the furniture or your nursery’s interior.
Make sure you buy VOC-free paints for lesser allergy reactions and less health-threatening effects.
No matter how pretty a color is, I cannot paint my kid’s nursery with unsafe paint!
As I mentioned earlier, the presence of VOC contributes to problems in the central nervous system, kidney, and liver.
Additional Tips for Creating a Toxic-Free Nursery
Aside from the mentioned tricks and recommendations in the previous sections, here are some of my additional tips for creating a non-toxic baby nursery!
- Use an organic diaper cream, Environment Working Group (EWG) certified, to keep your baby safe from allergy discomfort, redness, and irritation.
- Some recommended brands are Earth Mama and The Honest Company.
- You can buy organic baby bedding from Green Cradle to ensure VOC-free, 100% organic products, solid wood mattresses, and natural wood components.
- Let your peers know you prefer organic baby gifts (raw materials) to help them choose organic materials you and your baby will surely use.
- Avoid harsh lights because these are toxic red flags for babies and their eyes as they absorb more blue light at the beginning of their eye development.
Frequently Asked Questions
I know you have something in mind to ask, and with that, I have answered some of your frequently asked questions about creating a non-toxic nursery for your young ones.
Can I Put Play Things in My Baby’s Nursery?
Sure! Playtime is also very important!
Just remember that the items you put there are safe, non-toxic, and have the required certifications.
Here is a list of possible items you can include in your child’s nursery for playtime:
- Play yards
- Activity gyms
- Baby mobiles
- Play mats
- Rugs or carpets
- Baby swings (Remember to NOT let your baby stay on the swing for too long!)
What Kind of Lighting Should Be in a Baby’s Nursery?
You should put up soft, shaded, or diffused lights in a new baby nursery. Usually, I prefer soft-white and daylight-labeled bulbs as they are not too bright for my baby.
What Kind of Flooring Should Be in a Baby Nursery?
I like using laminated bamboo flooring as it is better than solid wood in baby nursery flooring.
Yet you should ensure that the varnish you use for lamination is VOC-free!
Otherwise, if it is the contrary, it can off-gas and stick into baby clothes, blankets, baby furniture, wall decor, and your non-toxic crib.
What is the Safest Baby Material?
The safest baby material for organic baby nursery furniture that does not off-gas harmful substances is solid wood.
This is especially if it has finishing touches from 100% Organic Baby Construction.
On the other hand, the safest organic baby material for baby clothes and textiles is organic cotton, which is soft, hypoallergenic, and antimicrobial.
Is It Possible to Create a Completely Non-Toxic Nursery?
I wish.
There is always some level risk involved in making a nursery. However, you can MINIMIZE your child’s exposure to these risks by taking the appropriate measures.
Stick with anything organic and be mindful of any hidden chemicals that may present.
What Are Some Natural Air Purifiers for a Baby’s Nursery?
Snake plants, aloe vera, and spider plants are great choices for natural air purifiers.
You can also get a HEPA air filter machine to remove dust particles and keep the air clean!
I was also want to highlight the importance of proper ventilation. Keep your windows open to circulate fresh air and reduce indoor pollutants.
Conclusion
While in a nesting phase, organizing and choosing nursery furniture, textiles, mattresses, clothing, and other baby essentials, always consider what will ELEVATE your baby’s sleep quality and overall health.
Jus to recap, look for these important certifications:
- A Greenguard Gold
- Global Organic Textile Standards
- Global Organic Latex Standards
- USDA certifications
When shopping for the best baby furniture and materials that will complement your non-toxic nursery, these are more important than designs or aesthetics.
Don’t get too carried away looking for the prettiest or cheapest items like me! Always choose the SAFEST!
Lastly, always choose VOC-free paints, as this can spell out all the differences in your nursery’s air quality.
So, now, I believe you are more than ready to nest, organize, and search for the things you will include in your baby’s safe and non-toxic nursery!
